Karen Ladson

Native New Yorker Karen Ladson got her first taste of
slam at the 1999 Nuyorican Semifinals. Watching a good
friend compete, she thought, "I could never do that."
A move to the Left Coast and one mundane dotcom job
changed all that. On January 14, 2001, Karen Ladson
set a goal: "to write a poem." One month later, she
won her first slam. Three months later, she became a
proud member of Team Berkeley 2001. Karen is also 1/3
of the mighty triumvirate known as sheslam, who
proudly host Birth of Verse.

Karen has the distinction of being the only poet to
win all four major Bay Area slams consecutively. She
has featured at SFinX, Sister Rise Up!, and Spoken
Elements. Her proudest accomplishment, however, is her
poetry and performance workshops with Bay Area youth
through Bay Area SCORES, YouthSpeaks and the Youth
Power Project. She is the author of "Peanut M&Ms® and
Other Horny Candy," co-host of Birth of Verse, and
co-founder of sheslam."
